Ms. W, an 81-year-old single woman living alone in a wealthy neighborhood, was struggling to manage her psychotropic medications. This significantly impacted her well-being and made her vulnerable to exploitation. Local police had visited her home multiple times due to behavioral issues, and an officer concerned about a man who had become involved with Ms. W contacted us for assistance, having worked with Senior Advocacy Group in the past.
Our team collaborated with the officer to meet with Ms. W and build trust to begin providing services. We discovered that the man had convinced Ms. W to sign a quick-claim deed, transferring her $3 million home to him (according to public records). In addition to the deed transfer, the man also convinced her to place his son into her Will as a beneficiary. Ms. W had no memory of signing the document. Working with the police officer, a detective, and Ms. W’s attorney, Senior Advocacy Group facilitated the signing of a new deed, returning the property to her name.
We consulted with Ms. W’s physician and the detective to understand and verify her manic state at time the deed was signed. As luck would have it, fortunately, Ms. W had communicated with her physician about her manic symptoms on the same day she signed the quick-claim deed.
A review of Ms. W’s financial transactions revealed that another “trusted friend” had access to her credit cards and bank account, with thousands of dollars’ worth of checks written to him from her account. This individual had a significant arrest record (according to sheriff’s records). Working with Ms. W’s attorney and POA, we closed her credit cards, provided her with a True Link pre-paid Visa to actively manage and monitor her spending activities, and updated the titling of her bank accounts to remove the individual as an owner of the account.
