COLLIER COUNTY, Fla.—The Collier County Sheriff’s Office has issued a warning about a fraudulent scheme targeting residents through voicemails and text messages.
The scam involves a fraudster leaving a voicemail advising the victim to contact a specific person at the sheriff’s office.
When the victim calls the provided number, they encounter a recorded phone menu that appears legitimate.
The scammers use various tactics, such as claiming the victim missed jury duty, has a warrant, is in contempt of court, or failed to pay a traffic citation. They may also impersonate organizations like the IRS, banks, or utility companies.
Authorities advise anyone receiving such messages to verify them by looking up the organization’s actual phone number and calling it. Regardless of how the message is received, it is a scam.
For help with any suspicious requests for money or personal information, residents can contact the Collier County Sheriff’s Office’s Call Before You “Pay” hotline at (239) 252-CALL (2255). The hotline is staffed by a deputy from the Financial Crimes Bureau between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.
